This mural portrait of Tunku Abdul Rahman, created by Sai Vijay, was painted on the wall of Pra Delima 4 Kindergarten at SK Olak Lempit, Banting.
Upon receiving the mural project, Vijay chose to portray Tunku Abdul Rahman through his own artistic interpretation rather than replicating an existing image. To achieve this, he developed an original sketch in his A5 sketchbook, using selected references to study the subject while maintaining a personal visual style.
After finalising the sketch, the artwork was carefully transferred onto the wall and executed using water-based mural colours. The entire mural was completed over a period of five days, with attention given to form, expression, and character, making the portrait both respectful and artistically distinctive.
This work stands as a meaningful tribute to the Father of Independence, while also reflecting the artist’s individual approach and creative identity.
Adjacent to the mural of Tunku Abdul Rahman, the main wall of the kindergarten was designed as a separate artwork with a strong emphasis on 3D elements and perspective. Hanis Kumar, Vijay’s friend and the head teacher of the kindergarten, expressed the desire for a visual concept that would create a sense of depth and dimensionality.
Responding to this brief, Vijay developed an original concept that incorporated a chessboard-inspired perspective, the name of the kindergarten, and two animated characters seen looking out from their respective windows. The idea was created using visual references provided by Hanis, while allowing Vijay the freedom to shape the composition in his own artistic style.
After reviewing the initial sketch, Hanis expressed great satisfaction with the concept. Following this approval, Vijay proceeded to execute the artwork on the main wall. The mural was completed over a period of four days, resulting in a vibrant and engaging piece that enhances the visual identity of the kindergarten and creates an inviting environment for children.
